Upgrading Your Life
One hundred thirty-six days-that is how long it has been since the first day of quarantine. Now that school is finally over, it is time for everyone to make the choice between what is right and what is easy. It would be easy to keep our eyes glued to the television screen and binge Netflix without a care in the world. However, doing that will only make you feel like utter crap. Use this time to commit to your plans, fulfill your goals, and work towards your future. All you have to do is stop thinking about it, and start working and doing it. It’s as simple as that. Here are some ideas on what you can do to upgrade your life:
I. Become an Avid Reader
When we read, we expose ourselves to new information, find different solutions for a specific problem, and discover ways to achieve our goals. You can find a topic that interests you; for example, mental health, physical fitness, diet/nutrition, history, science, etc. Reading allows us to experience more sensations, makes us more empathetic, provides mental stimulation, decreases stress, and improves memory. Personally, I enjoy reading fantasy novels such as The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. However, I am also going to finish reading Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time and Plokhy’s The Gates of Europe.
II. Prioritize Exercising
Exercising is important now more than ever. It’s a keystone habit that influences change in every aspect of our lives. Physical benefits are something everyone knows: you look better, lose weight, become lean, and become fit. Most people who exercise observe that they feel happier, are more motivated, and less depressed. The reason for this is that the body produces natural hormones while exercising, such as serotonin, endorphins, and a protein known as Brain-Derived Neurotic Factor (BDNF). These hormones reduce stress level, lifts a person’s mood, improves learning, aids in better sleep, and increases confidence. Since quarantine began, the first thing I have been doing to start my day is going on a run. This helps me feel refreshed and ready to conquer the day. In the afternoon or evening, I do a strength workout to work the muscles.
III. Learn a New Skill
Learning a new skill can be daunting at first, but results in you growing as a person, developing your knowledge base and improving yourself for the better. Learning something allows you to access new and different opportunities and the chance to be adventurous with your skillset. The internet, YouTube, and books are the best sources to gain new knowledge and try doing something in your interest. For example, I am using Khan Academy to learn about Economics, YouTube for survival skills, and reading The Gates of Europe to gain an in-depth history of Ukraine.
These are habits that can increase productivity and help you move forward in your life. Reading, exercising, and learning a new skill will make such a difference in the way you feel about yourself, your choices, and how you spend your time every day. It is important to not slack and succumb to the laziness that comes with quarantine and summer break. Use this time to discover yourself and what you enjoy doing in your life.
