What to do When Feeling Overwhelmed

Do you find yourself feeling so overwhelmed about everything that's going on? As if the world will come crashing down on you at any second. It suffices to say that this year has been 'different' compared to any other time in our lives. Lately, I've been finding myself laying in bed awake past midnight, anxiously thinking about the upcoming school year, S.A.T preparation, college admissions, and the overall future of our world and where will go from here. Today I woke up with this horrible sense of dread and worry about the same stuff I was dwelling on last night. However, I wasn't just going to sit around let that spoil a perfectly fine day. Whenever I find myself in a state of extreme worry, I find it best to distract my mind and do stuff that makes me feel at peace. These are activities I do to free myself from a state of burden and worry:
Folding Clothes - there's something about repeated folding and placing that happens to soothe agitation for me. This is a great way to take your mind off your troubles because the repetitive action, movement, and assortment make blood flow to the brain.

Read a Book - reading a book is so relaxing and engaging at the same time. Find yourself an excellent place to plot down and put your mind in someone else's shoes. I love reading on the couch in my basement because of the cooler temperature and quietness. I'm currently half-way through the fifth Harry Potter book isn't Umbridge just the best...

Move Around - as simple as that. Just get up and move your body. You can stretch, go for a walk, do an intense workout, just do whatever works for you. I love going for walks around the neighborhood in the evening when it's not so hot outside. Amazingly, the affect movement has on our entire mind and body.
Try Yoga and/or Meditation - doing one or the other has been proven to calm anxiety because it requires you to be in alignment physically, mentally, and spiritually. In all honesty, I have not tried doing yoga or meditation, but a lot of other people do and they say that it helps them to be in alignment and control of their mind.
Watch Comedy - a bit of laughter has a magical effect on how we're feeling. I like watching comedy shows such as The Good Place and The Office because they're so easy going and fun. As they say, 'laughter is the best medicine.'
As high schoolers, we all know the feeling of having so much going on and being overwhelmed about
the future. Just remember that sometimes, letting go is loving yourself even more.
