What's the Worst That Can Happen?

It’s funny how the feeling of relief that comes after the passing of a big event can evaporate once you find out the next big thing you have to prepare for. Through the course of our lives, there will be moments when we are forced to step up and work hard to accomplish our desired goals. Sometimes, we will emerge victorious. And other times, things will end up differently than what you had hoped for…

Whatever the outcome, it’s essential to not let yourself be consumed by the huge amounts of fear or nervousness that precedes this big event. If you find yourself incredibly overwhelmed and panicked about everything that you have to do and get ready for, then keep reading to find out what will help you relieve those thoughts and feelings…

1. Write It All Down

Thinking about everything you have to do or prepare for is going to make your brain go insane. Instead, write it all down on a notebook, sticky note, piece of paper, or (my personal favorite) on the Notes app. Seeing a clear outline of the tasks will help you feel more organized and stay mentally focused. By creating a physical product that displays all the things previously stuck in your head, you establish clarity on what you need to do and will feel less stressed because all your to-do’s went out from your mind and onto the paper.

2. Focus on What You CAN Control

Unfortunately, most of the time we tend to dwell on things beyond our control. Focusing on the things we can control is beneficial, focusing on things out of our control is not. To really determine what you can and cannot control, create two lists: one of everything you can possibly control in your current situation and one of everything you can’t control. Then spend your time and energy working on what you can influence and impact.

3. Share Your Feelings

Talk to the people close to you about your worries, doubts, and struggles. You’ll find immediate relief in your stress as you share your concerns. It’s important to confide in those people because they can help you feel more grounded and comforted about the whole situation.

4. What’s the Worst That Can Happen?

When you face anxiety, fear, and nervousness, try this technique: imagine all possible negative consequences of the situation you are facing. By exaggerating your fear and going through the worst thing that can happen, you end up making your fears look irrational. You will come to the understanding that the worst possible outcome isn’t so terrible after all. Deliberating on the matter can end up restoring your perspective on the anxiety you’re up against.

There will be moments in our lives that invoke powerful fear and anxiety. It’s in these times when we can feel on edge, rocky, staggered, and imbalanced. That’s why it’s important to learn how best to deal with fear and anxiety so that you can resist its negative effects and not let it control how you live your life.
