Resuming my New Hobby: Coloring

Around September I picked up a new hobby: coloring. I never ever ever get new hobbies, so let me quickly explain how this happened.

So, I’m part of my school’s mental health club, Rams Minds Matter, which is a chapter of the Our Minds Matter organization, and we planned at our interest meeting to do stress relieving activities, which included coloring. As you may know, I’m obsessed with tv and movies, and the idea of doing coloring pages of different franchises hooked me. So I went online and printed a coloring page of… (this was still the time of my Harry Potter 6 obsession), the Harry Potter 6 movie poster, because it looks cool. I gathered all of our colored pencils, put on headphones to listen to music, and just started.

It was definitely a win. I was stressed that day, for some reason, and coloring helped me switch my mind to something else. While I tried to stay accurate to the source material, I made some creative decisions to make it more of my own. It felt super relaxing, peaceful, while still being connected to your mind and in touch with your thoughts, which drive the creativity. In the middle of writing this, I googled: coloring effects on brain. It essentially echoed what I said before, that coloring calms the amygdala, the fear/anxiety center of the brain, because you’re switching your attention from yourself and your thoughts onto the present moment of coloring. It’s almost a form of meditation.

I chose this topic to write about because on my to-do list today I have “coloring page,” so it’s only fitting. However, I also wanted to share my personal experience to inspire you to give it a try. Especially if you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. It’s a really satisfying process, and it’s nice to reconnect back to something fun you did when life was less complicated.

Here is my current collection (it would be weird if I didn’t show what I did):

Thanks for reading and viewing.
